I also considered the Synology DS212j but that is ~$200 without disks.I use it for the following functions: -To store and stream media to my Apple TV (2nd gen with xbmc) -As a time machine backup disk for my Mac -As a torrent downloader (client comes installed, is fast and easy to use) I was initially using it with a Belkin N750 Router but was having some problems - my Mac's console revealed that the smb connection would drop and reconnect after every minute and this led to choppy/unreliable video playback. The reviews on the WD were not the best, with alot of people complaining of faults so I decided to go with Buffalo.Setting it up was so easy, I didn't think it would be so easy. I connected the device to my wireless router with the ethernet cable that comes in the box then I used the CD that came in the box to install the software needed. All I did was press next a couple of times and voila the NAS was ready to use. You have to use the NAS Navigator software that you installed to tell your laptop to connect to the NAS. Once you do that you can map the NAS to a drive on "my computer". It mapped the NAS to the M drive and now its like I have an extra partition or hard drive on my laptop. You even get web access (cloud) features with not much setup pain. As is the case with most hardware products these days, there is always a firmware update available right out of the box. It ran okay, but the screen feedback as to the update process was terrible. Once you have done firmware updates before, you should be able to get around the lack of feedback. The drive itself is very quiet and minimalist in design. No switches or anything to touch on the box itself, just data and power and you handle the rest via software. Buyers remorse did creep in when just two days after getting it delivered, the price drops by $10, but that's life. Not the quietest: the coling fan breaks the office's silence, and the internal disks also clacks when accessed - not much to bother. What really worries me is the temperature it operates: always above 55�C, too hot to handle. With all this heat, my data would be safe? Throughput is a strong point: operating in Gigabit Ethernet, I was able to read/write data at 21MB/s rate, similar to those obtained using a local disk. However, speed relies on a Gigabit network: you may need to change router, network cards and cables to escape the 100Mbps Fast Ethernet limit, today's standard in most home and office. I already had one hdd failure. I got a hdd replacement (The customer service agent was good. The problem is that I had to wait more than 4 weeks for the disk replacement. Maybe because of problems with argentinian customs... But they didn't had spare discs here for this situation... That's bad). Now I have a second failure... Let's see. That's not a good thing for a device where you have so much valuable things! |

It now shows up as drive L on all my computers. This it tied into the Linksys Router along with 2 Desktops, the Cable modem and the Netgear Switch a third Desktop and the Arkview Server are tied into the Netgear switch. It was going to take 5 days to copy from USB to the drive. Luckily, I bought it at Costco so the return was a non issue.Next, I tried out the iOmega 2TB home cloud thingy. This case is beautiful, copied faaaasssttt, and had the internal Bittorrent downloads (but the interface is crap compared to the Buffalo). I was so happy. HOWEVER...it does not function with netbooks running Win 7 Starter. Not at all good be cause this is over 66% of our laptops. Also, I would like use it to stream videos to my iPad, but the 10M limits kind of prevent this from happening. File transfer is pretty fast, but it crashed a few times on my MAC if you copy 3 or more large files (1G or more) at the same time. Any files that cannot be copied will have an error message "file in use", but I know it was not, so I have to recopy it again (not sure if this is a MAC problem or the NAS). I used this to stream videos to my PS3 and it worked well, some research is needed because PS3 did not work the first time, or some version of the firm ware did not work with this NAS. I also used it to stream music to my Sonos, and it worked smoothly. Remember to put the switch on, not the auto mode, because it will shut down without a computer connection. |
