Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. Having a drive with NAS capabilities is excellent because you need less hardware to make the drive available to Sonos. Lastly, because the drive doesn't have an on/off switch, you won't have to worry if you lose power that you'll have to turn this back on (like with the old Linksys NSLU2).

The only reason I don't give this five stars is because the "access over the web" part of the feature set is misleading. What you might expect is that this drive is available over the web through some sort of login and without the need of a PC to facilitate. Unfortunately you need all of those things to make this drive accessible over the web. The software WD provides to enable this, "MioNet", seems dated and rickety- not to mention NOT free. If leaving your PC on is acceptable for you, might I recommend downloading the Opera web browser and using their "Unite" service which will provide many of the same services as MioNet- but for *free*.

Overall a strong purchase and a nice product. If you have a Sonos system and want your music available, then this is the drive you need.

Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices mimic file servers on a network. However instead of a big computer, the NAS is roughly the size of a trade paperback. They are preferable to portable hard drives because multiple computers can access and save to them.

This WD device is easy to set up, and you can be registered, configured, and otherwise up and running in just a few minutes. I gave my assistant partial access to the drive, and password protected the rest. I also downloaded all the photos from my MacBook Pro onto it, which allowed me to use a free app for my iPhone and iPad to remotely access all of my pictures. Since those files are substantially more than carry around on either the phone or pad, this is a space savings bonanza.

The drive also works with Time Machine, a Leopard and Snow Leopard application that protects your Mac's data. Because I already have a Apple Time Capsule MC343LL/A 1TB Sim DualBand, it is a feature I am not using (Time Machine) only automatically synchs to one source).

The price is right and this NAS will not disappoint.

These devices are one of the "must-haves" for the modern home entertainment center or home networks. They can perform multiple tasks - from backups to media streaming. If you have a network, and just want a common place to store files, this will do it. Need a streaming media server for your new TV or networked media player? Ditto. Automatic network backup? Check.

I'm using it for storing photos and videos. Since digital photos are only virtual (no more negatives for safety!), backups are a must. I keep several backups, as photography is a hobby and a job. I also have media streaming devices hooked up to my TV's, and they can play video, audio and show photos from the web and attached network devices. This device shows up on the list of network devices, and it's a few clicks to navigate to the media desired. Streaming works perfectly.

Everything you need is in the box. A short networking cable, power supply, the network drive and installation CD. Installation is easy and straight forward. Attach the power and network cables, sit down at your PC, drop in the install CD, and follow the steps. You can't just plug in and go - you need to run the install CD. This is not just a drive - it's also a mini file server. You need to set up permissions and user accounts.

The first thing the installer did was check for an update. One was available, so I let it install it. This took about 25 minutes. This step can be skipped, but it's always a good idea to install updates. After that was completed I created a couple of user accounts - quick and easy. You can create private storage accounts, public, and pick who has access to what accounts. So little Billy can't see his sister's stuff, or each employee can have a private and public storage area. Really handy and well executed.
