This NAS is the one! I purchased the 212J model first to save some money, and I thought I had the whole nine yards, but this DS212 is in another class. You can check my 212J review in Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS212j (White). Although I don't see any increase in the average transfer speed of DS212--I still get about 30MB/sec with one enterprise HDD--this one is by far a better NAS compared to the "J" model. From the moment you open the box you realize everything about this model is different and more professional. If you are considering all the 212 series' models, and you are serious about these stuffs, just get this one over the "J" model.
I could easily use the hard drive configured with 212J in DS212. It just formatted the DSM partition and was ready to go. All my previous information and data preserved. Interesting part is, all of my settings for Download Manager, Users Privileges, Users Groups, and Folder Settings kept intact, and after Synology Assistant configured the drive, it was just ready to go. Congratulations Synology for designing one of the best NAS software for all of this and many more features.
Synology 212J has an annoying design flaw. Although the fan is very quiet, the case design actually echoes the hard drive so badly that easily could be heard in our living room from the home office! DS212 does not have this problem; clearly, because the case is completely different. Unlike DS212J, this DS212 has two hot-swap front bays that you can easily access them without opening the case. I've uploaded a few side-by-sides pictures here so you can check these features out. In addition to these flaws, I have found a couple of complains in Synology forum that 212J back USB ports get loose over time. If you really want to get the "J" model, do some more research about it.

This is my second Synology Disk Station I've bought. I am extremely pleased with both, so far they have been solidly reliable. Granted that it is a little bit pricey I still recommend this product a 100%. Definitely worth every penny. You have to be a little bit computer and Network savvy since this product would pose a challenge for any beginner.
A few years ago I started looking for solutions to protect my growing amount of business and home data after a couple of external disk crashes and computer crap-outs. I tried other NAS' with no success.

I was nervous ordering this product, but so far it has been a great choice! It installed and configured easily and has worked flawlessly.
